The key feature of these planetary systems is an isolated, Earth-sized planet with a roughly 1-d orbital period. Several studies of the architectures of planetary systems discovered by NASA’s Kepler mission have noted differences between the single-planet systems and the multiplanet systems (2, 11–13). Our resulting sample includes 3,063 candidates in 2,373 systems—1,890 in single systems and 1,173 candidates in 483 multiplanet systems. These regions where the multiplanet systems do not match the properties of the single-planet systems indicate potentially new populations of planetary systems. The existence of this population may contribute to the putative overabundance of single planets among the Kepler systems (2, 12, 13, 27).
