Though it was a departure from the earlier G.S., it was similar in design to the contemporary Vespa 150. It was physically larger than the Vespa 150. 150 and the two-piece case design of the Vespa 150. In terms of the cases, they were altered to make them similar to those on the Vespa 150. Since the motor design is essentially unique to the 160, many motor parts are very difficult to source.
Vintage Vespa GS 160 mark 1 Air Filter. This is for the bean can type of airbox that was only used on the 1962 GS 160 Mark 1. This is a very rare air filter to find, and after these are gone there won't be anymore, so it might be a good opportunity to buy a spare one and squirrel it away just in case. The GS 160 mk 1 is a unique Vespa in that it had the rear toolbox that no other Vespa had , this was the new design for Vespas new improve 160 engine . Still piston ported and a torquey ride , the GS mk1 was a complete overhaul on what was the top model from Piaggio the GS150 . The mk was only made for 1 year 1962 and there was only around 30,000 made compared to 600,000 of the standard models , so very rare and rarer still to have survived all these years , probably less than half made might be still around . This MK is an older restoration and might require a revamp or ride it as is for now , it has the 12v ignition and lighting upgrade but still the original engine . You can also combine a GS type rim half with a P series rim half, but I personally wouldn't bother. The repop GS seats look nice, but they are actually nothing like the original seat which has foam padding underneath. I see you are missing your speedo - the GS speedo uses a unique bracket to connect to the headset. VESPA GS 160 SERIES 1 (IC-225) … SOLDThis is an exceptional scooter. It is one of the rarest of the Vespas, a GS160 Series 1 with a round tail. There were a few versions of the GS 160, the first series had the small glove-box in the frame behind the seat and the second series had a larger glove-box behind the legshields. Of the first series, there were some at the beginning of the production run with a round tail, and some of the later ones with a flat tail section to accommodate directly bolting on a license plate. One of the best of all the Vespas, and outstanding conditions.
I pulled the points cam off my GS -160 and put a new crank in the motor, but forgot to mark which way the cam came off and as I previously stated it's not marked. I put it all back together and shot the timing with a strobe and noticed the stator was turned to its max stops. If I did not mention it, the GS -160 cam has a thin wire spacer that goes between it and the crank. The SS -180 has a flat spacer wider spacer. These parts are needed to maintain proper spacing between the cam and crank.
