The ring positioning pins (gap) go up, away from the exhaust port. The '61 VBB I am building now has a molded-top piston. The molding makes a V shape. I believe that the ring positioning pins should go up, away from the exhaust port, meaning the V shape goes up, toward the spark plug hole, also.

Using the wiring diagram for that wiring loom, locate the wire from the stator that powers the headlight. While the scooter is running, use a multi meter to check voltage from that wire at the junction box. If you don't have voltage or very weak voltage, it can be a problem with that lighting stator coil or wiring/grounding. If there's around 6 volts there, go to the wire on the switch that powers the headset and check voltage there. Make your way up to the connection for the bulb and check voltage with a multi-meter.
