I'm not sure where the "temperamental" image comes from, especially with modern Vespas, but I've flogged my GTS just as hard, if not harder, than my Japanese machines, and it's worked flawlessly. An oil and filter change, new tires, and 7000kms later and some hard highway driving, and she purrs like a kitten. That's not to say there aren't some initial quality issues, but my experience taught me that they occur to every brand. Both the Honda and the Yammy were bought new, where as my Vespa was second-hand. The Honda has mixture/carb issues, and the Yamaha had a battery drain issue.
